Local Musicians Do Music For Indie Film

BY RICK FOSTER SUN CHRONICLE STAFF

NORTON - Take a Berklee College of Music grad and a veteran touring musician and songwriter, add the lure of independent filmmaking, and what do you get?

A partnership that's destined to make its debut as movie music-makers in the new film, "Run Grammie, Run!"

Jay Fernandes, owner of Saucer Sound studios in Norton, and Keith Hayes, a former rock keyboardist from Mansfield, combined their efforts over the last three years to write and record music for the movie being filmed by Lakeville filmmaker David Singer.

The flick, which includes several local community theater actors, is a lighthearted "dramedy" about an elderly woman determined to run in the Boston Marathon.

Fernandes, who studied composition at Berklee, had a long run as a musician in the regionally famous band The Probers before turning full-time attention to producing and recording other artists.

Hayes performed in his own and worked in various capacities with national touring acts including Air Supply and The Hooters before turning to business as owner of a local preschool.

The pair have known each other for a number of years, with Fernandes recording much of Hayes's recent work. The men's movie connection was almost accidental.

"David called me and was interested in music for a movie and wanted to sample some of our clients' work," said Fernandes. Fernandes immediately thought of Hayes, a versatile pop pianist and imaginative lyricist capable of responding to assignments.

Between them Fernandes and Hayes wrote a handful of songs for the film, in which the pair appear briefly. Fernandes sings one number in the movie in which he appears as the emcee at a community fundraiser. Hayes recorded a duet with one of the stars, Mansfield's Kathleen Boucher.

"Run Grammie, Run!" which is being made for direct release to DVD, is scheduled to premiere in January. Discussions are underway concerning the making of a soundtrack CD, Fernandes said.
